Environmental authorities in northwest China’s Qinghai Province are working to conserve endangered carps in Qinghai Lake.
Gymnocypris przewalskii, also known as naked carp, is a species of fish native to Qinghai Lake, China’s biggest lake. As a result of overfishing and habitat loss, naked carps have a survival rate of 0.002 percent.
Since 2002, authorities have increased efforts to conserve the fish using fish farming and artificial breeding.
The artificial breeding process used by the authorities includes taking eggs from female carps in Shaliu and Quanji rivers — which feed into Qinghai Lake, inseminating the eggs in an artificial breeding station and then, after the fertilized eggs grow, releasing the fry back into the rivers.
Around 10 million fry were artificially released back into the lake in mid-June.
